It’s fall and I don’t know about you all, but I am tired of rap debates and beefs and I just want to kick back, relax and drink apple cider while talking to my nonexistent bae.
Here’s a list of some of the R&B songs that are currently in my rotation. No matter what phase of 'cuffin season' you're in, there's a song for you.
Bulletproof- Jade Novah featuring Kevin Ross
Some of you might be familiar with Jade Novah from her hilarious Beyonce impressions, but this woman’s voice is no joke by any means. Bulletproof is a track from her debut album “All Blue” that dropped earlier this year and this is honestly one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in my life. Lyrics, music, everything! My boy Kevin Ross holds his own as well. Who doesn’t love a good duet? If the next time I'm in love doesn't feel like this, I don't want it.
Girls Need Love- Summer Walker
I’m actually a bit late on this one. After scrolling Twitter I came across the video and fell in love instantly! This track is so sexy and makes me want to put on some heels and show out. I love when women are confident and take control while telling men exactly what's on their minds, and on this track, Summer does exactly that. The Atlanta singer has been making quite a buzz lately and I can’t wait to see the trajectory of her career. I’m rooting for you sis!
I randomly discovered the sister duo—comprised of Ivana and Jessica Nwokike on Spotify a few months ago and this specific song caught my attention immediately. I can’t put my finger on exactly which act, but this song and their sound gives me major 90’s vibes. This song was released in the summer, but I feel it’s a perfect song for that autumn crush.
Jealousy- Dawn Richard
I’ve been a fan of Dawn since her Danity Kane days and I am so proud of the strides she’s made as a solo artist. Dawn is arguably one of the most versatile artist out today. She can do pop, techno, rock, you name it. I always enjoy when she taps into her R&B roots and Jealousy is definitely one of my favorite R&B moments from Ms. Richard. We've all been irrational and jealous over a significant other right? Not only can I relate, but she’s is slaying me with the vocals. Definitely on repeat.
Fire & Rain- Jake & Papa
I often mention how the bar for male R&B is disgustingly low these days, but this brother-duo from the 818, Jake & Papa, have been giving me life with their music since 2011. I love everything about these dudes and this song serves no different. A tale of forbidden love, this song explores what you do when the person you want is already taken. The bridge is also a Stevie Wonder flip, so it’s an automatic win. If you want some singing singing, please check them out. Thank me later.
OTW- Khalid featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 6lack-
Khalid is becoming one of my favorite new artists. He keeps a bop! OTW features my other fav Ty Dolla $ign so you know the song goes. This song makes me just want to hop in the car with imaginary bae and drive until we get tired. Future bae if you’re reading this, you can be on your way now.
Could’ve Been- H.E.R. featuring Bryson Tiller-
Now this song here, whew chile. We all have been in a situation where we get to thinking what things “could’ve been” with someone. Even when you know that person isn’t right for you, those thoughts refuse to leave your mind. H.E.R. and Bryson Tiller perfectly tackle this emotional conundrum from both sides. I wish I could find out my play count on this song, I’m sure it’s something ridiculous.
Whipped Cream- Ari Lennox
From the camp of Dreamville, Ari Lennox is another one of my new favorite voices. Whipped Cream explores the many emotions we go through after a break up. Sadness, denial, anger, binge drinking, you know how it goes. I’ve been here quite a few times so once I heard this song, my soul automatically reacted. I'm still blasting her old projects so I hope Whipped Cream means a new album is near.
Trip- Ella Mai
Despite all the recent drama surrounding this song, I still love it. (Redacted) had no business messing with her song in the first place, but I digress. Anywho, it’s cool to have a song where the woman admits she’s tripping. I usually start tripping when a relationship is going to well, too. An unfortunate truth. Sidebar: This song is so much better than Boo'd Up.
Come Through & Chill- Miguel featuring J.Cole
Miguel + J.Cole= endless fire emojis. This tracked produced by the gawd Salaam Remi, is pretty straightforward, it’s time to come through and “chill”. Cuffing season wouldn’t be complete without some fun, emotionless, sex right? We all know Miguel is one of the kings of the sexy tunes and never disappoints. Love me some Miguel!
